_What’s changing_

The new release exposes a new metadata format for named and project environments.

To upgrade, follow the instructions for your preferred method [here](https://beta.floxdev.com/docs/managing-flox/user_update/).

Check that you’re running v0.0.8 by running `flox --version`.

Then, run `flox upgrade` to upgrade your default environment.

You will be prompted to do so, and once you accept, the upgrade will convert the metadata format. Run `flox edit` to see it in action, and check out the documentation here.

This new format allows us (and you!) to leverage the environment metadata file as a Nix expression, which provides some advantages that will become apparent in future releases.

Let us know if you run into any issues!
